This news article from last week discusses governmental cuts to healthcare and affordability concerns for patients. Practices across the country are seeing symptoms of the cuts, with patients opting out of their sick and well visits. These cuts, along with cost-of-living concerns for Americans, is leaving healthcare neglected.
This issue can impact nursing practice at all levels of the healthcare system. From the macrosystem level, it effects income inequality across the nation and access to healthcare. It also effects the ability to treat population related health concerns due to hesitancy to seek care. From a mesosystem level, hospitals and health systems are needing to integrate financing and payments systems to promote seeking healthcare. Also, with patients opting out of their appointments, clinics can face staffing and scheduling difficulties. At a microsystem level, nursing practice is affected tremendously. Clinicians are unable to provide direct patient care if the patient cannot afford healthcare. With patients opting out of their appointments, staffing needs can be affected to save on operating costs, placing healthcare jobs on the line.
Healthcare policy impacts this issue because decision-making is being done by the government without considering access to care. Without proper funding for Medicaid, patients simply cannot receive care. In turn, our overall healthcare as Americans is compromised as it trickles down the systems.
One potential policy change that could help address this issue is increasing Medicaid coverage for primary and preventative care. This would reduce the amount of costly emergency room visits and hospitalizations. According to a study conducted in June of 2022, emergency room visits decreased for states that expanded Medicaid coverage (Ukert et al., 2022). This change can positively impact all levels of the healthcare system.
