The manager who made a significant impact on my career as a cardiac specialty nurse possessed the qualities of diplomacy and collaboration. One thing I really appreciate about him to this day is how much he made me feel welcome on the unit on my first day. He was someone that I noticed very quickly had the respect of his peers and superiors. I remember that sometimes we would joke about the inability to say if he was part of the union or part of the organization hierarchy because he was jovial and knew how to communicate with his staff. He was approachable and never considered himself just a manager. He would make rounds every morning during the week and ensure that he checked in with us to find out how things were going. This inspired me to consider my first role in leadership as a charge nurse. I understood from my manager that leadership and management are intertwined because, in both cases, you are dealing with all sorts of people with different perspectives, and to be successful, you must be willing to listen objectively.
Just as I mentioned above, he had strong people skills, so he had the ability to influence his colleagues in a positive way. He knew how to bring others along through active listening, empathy, and honest dialogue. The result was a culture of trust, coherence, and psychological safety on the unit. By making himself available, staff members were able to speak up when there were issues regarding patient safety. He would give feedback that highlighted what the unit was doing correctly and what needed to be improved. As a result of his leadership, the staff morale was high, the turnovers were low, and the patients were mostly satisfied with the care they received in our unit.
There were several levels of competence exhibited by my manager, according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN, 2021); these competencies include his ability to influence change using guided principles that are rooted in evidence-based practice. He also used his influence as a manager to advocate for his staff members. He never took advantage of his position but sought to promote the welfare of his staff. When the unit lacked supplies or equipment, he was at the forefront proactively communicating with vendors to ensure the unit was always running smoothly.
