The definition of being statistical literate means having the ability to comprehend data, calculate and interpret accurate data, make judgments based on quality data, provide statistics to support an argument, evaluate credible and reliable resources, have a full understanding of statistical concepts and correlate information to influence critical decisions.

It is important to be statistically literate since numbers are in every aspect of our lives. For example, we must be able to understand numbers in graphs, table, and surveys. As consumers, it is essential that we know how to evaluate claims which are presented on television, in newspapers and other printed materials, and also information listed on the Internet. Being statistically literate is also central since it is critical for individuals to develop a goal for learning to think critically and learn reasoning which focuses on citizens being well-informed.
