GRADING CRITERIA: The total points awarded will be based on the thoroughness of your answers (which includes a length of at least 150-200 words per question), the understanding of the material demonstrated in your answers, the critical thinking demonstrated in the portion of the questions that asks for your opinion, and the grammar/mechanics of your writing.

Please note: These answers need to be your own work. Simply parroting back word-for-word the author’s’ words will result in a poor grade.

1. Explain what is meant by the concept of Dharma. What were the circumstances that first brought the idea of Dharma about? Do you believe any other religions or philosophies (East or West) have concepts similar to Dharma? Explain. (If you believe it is unique explain why)

2. What were the Upanishads? What do the Upanishads tell us about death? Why was the question of “Who is the greatest god?” (p. 164) an important part of the Upanishads?

            What does Carolyn Brown Heinz mean when she says that our “embodiedness [is] governed by karma[.]” (p. 165)

3. Discuss the circumstances that led to the Meiji Restoration. Why did the end of the Shogunate cause some Japanese embarrassment and prompted them to reevaluate their country?

            What was meant by “selective borrowing?” Do you think the restoration gave the Japanese any advantages over other Asian countries? Explain.

4. Compare and contrast the Korean and Vietnam colonial experiences in the 19^th century. How were they similar; how were they different?

Describe what happened to each country after World War Two? How did the United States factor into what events occurred in each country after WWII?
