Select the Problem or Condition You Will Be Addressing Based on the Data Presented
· State the public health problem or condition you choose. Obesity
· Explain why: The reason obesity will be addressed is because it considered an epidemc in New York City (City of New York, 2019a). In addition, obesity is linked to diabetes and hypertension (National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, 2012). This explains why diabetes and hypertension are also health issues that are affecting many individuals in New York City. Decreasing obesity rates could also result in the decrease in diabetes rates and hypertension rates (Mayo Clinic, 2019).
· Provide the following data on your select problem or condition.
Obesity | New York City | New York State | National/Global |
Incidence | |||
Prevalence | 34% of the population is overweight.
22% of the population is obese (City of New York, 2019a) Total= 56% |

Identify Who Bears the Burden of This Condition in Your Community of Interest
Select your target population. Use data to explain why this population bears the burden of the condition. The target population would be the individuals living in the New York City borough of the Bronx. The reason is because this borough has the highest obesity rate in New York City (QNS, n.d.). In addition, the Bronx has the lowest average household income in New York City (U.S Census Bureau, 2018). Low-income is linked to obesity because healthy foods are more expensive than unhealthy foods (Drewnowski, 2010). According to Beaulac, Kristjansson, & Cummins (2019), “Low-income neighborhoods lack full-service grocery stores and farmers’ markets where residents can buy a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products” (p. A105). Even if more grocery stores were available, obesity might still be an issue because healthy foods are very pricey in comparison to unhealthy foods.
