The topic previously discussed was in discussion 5 science and diversity, I choose the article, Would You Want A Computer to Judge Your Risk of HIV by Gina Kolata. The article discusses using computer algorithms that are used to identify patients that are at a higher risk for getting HIV without discrimination. The software reviews health records with set predictors and factors to flag patients. By identifying these patients, the software would allow the doctors to discuss and prescribe the proper treatment to their patients. The social sciences lens “is the study of society and the relationship between people” (SHU, 2019). The social science lens has given me a better understanding on the stigma and discrimination the HIV community faces. It helps understand how human judgement can affect the treatment of others. It intersects with the history lens by drawing the connection on events that have happened to lead to the negative view on HIV and the gay community.
