Research Proposal 1 answer below »
Annotated Bibliography and Research Proposal 200pts.
For this project you will need to spend some time familiarizing yourself with various academic research focused on a specific topic. By the end of this project, you should have a clearer picture of what researchers are saying and doing regarding this topic/issue of study. This project is also an opportunity to practice professional writing requiring library research and research design. This will require two parts: (1) an annotated bibliography and (2) a research proposal.
Part 1: The Annotated Bibliography: 70 pts.
An annotated bibliography offers more than the bibliographic information. In addition to the source information for the academic articles, books, websites, and/or periodicals, annotations are added to each bibliographic entry. These annotations provide a brief summary, assessment, and reflection of each source. The purpose for these annotations are various, but most importantly, annotations help you maintain and keep track of your reference materials you will be using for the paper/study/research article you plan to write. In this part of the assignment, you will be using a format adapted from Oregon State University’s “rhetorical précis.” The guidelines are as follows:
a) In a single coherent sentence give the following:-name of the author, title of the work, date in parenthesis;-a rhetorically accurate verb (such as “assert,” “argue,” “deny,” “refute,” “prove,” disprove,”
“explain,” etc.);-a that clause containing the major claim (thesis statement) of the work.
b) In a single coherent sentence give an explanation of how the author develops and supports the major
claim (thesis statement).
c) In [1-2] coherent sentence[s] give a statement of the author’s [or researcher’s] purpose, followed by an
“in order to” phrase.
d) In a single coherent sentence give a description of the intended audience and/or the relationship
the author establishes with the audience. (SEE this site for a sampleprécis.)
Each entry for your annotated bibliography will need to include a rhetorical précis. These one-paragraph annotations should be no more than 5 sentences long and no less than 4 sentences long.
Additional Requirements:Format the reference entries as you would your reference page for a paper.Place the annotation, or précis, after its reference entry.Use APA format. NOTE: see the sample APA paper for format. Remember to use hanging indents. You must have between 8 and 10 sources. Six (6) sources need to be academic journal articles. Two (2) need to be popular science articles. If you want to include more than eight (8), please don’t go over 10 sources.
Part 2: Research Proposal Guidelines: 100pts.)
This research proposal is designed to identify a topic/issue of interest of which the researcher will conduct further research and analysis. In this proposal, I want to know what the issue is, why it is important, and how you will analyze the issue. Remember, you are notconducting the study in this proposal. You are identifying the issue and proposing a project to further study the issue. You need to justify your research/experimental design. Proposals are typically used to share a plan for study and gain approval and support from a committee. In the sciences, proposals may also justify requests for funding or equipment.
Basic Requirements:(The items below are your outline for organizing your proposal.)
1. Introduce the larger topic in a relevant context.
2. Narrow down the issue and state what you plan to look at generally (NOTE: the methods will come later).
3. Include at least 5 sources that help explain the issue, its background, and two or three perspectives on the issue. (This is a mini literature review. NOTE: You will need to incorporate all 8 references in the proposal.)
4. Explain what questions, or hypotheses, you plan to address and what you will do to further critique the issue and the ways it has been studied.
5. Explain your methods of research. Identify essential variables. Will you have to control for any biases? Consider time constraints. You may design a survey to gather data or conduct a meta-analysis. Describe how you will collect your data. What method of analysis will you use to make sense of your results? If you have access to additional lab equipment, you may propose a more controlled method of analysis.
6. Include a final paragraph outlining the paper that would follow the research project (NOTE: You are NOT conducting the research study you are planning. This is only a proposal/plan.)
Formatting and Other Requirements:1000 words (not including the title page and reference page)6 scholarly peer reviewed articles and 2 popular science articlesMaintain APA format (NO ABSTRACT)NOTE: If you are unable to organize your ideas in this proposal, the research project may not be approved. A proposal may have ethical issues that you will have to address. Do the best you can to address them.
