The obesity epidemic in America is a common topic of discussion, due to its serious nature and related health issues, which also lends itself to being of greater interest to research groups. One particular study, performed in metropolitan Portland, Oregon, was interested in the effect that the density of fast-food restaurants has on the surrounding area (Li et al, 2009). Multilevel logistic regression analysis was used to determine the correlation between the dependent variable (fast-food outlet density) and the independent variables (BMI, frequency of visits to fast-food restaurants, fried food consumption, level of physical activity, self-efficacy of eating fruits and vegetables, household incomes, and race/ethnicity). A total of 1221 residents with a mean age of 65 were randomly polled, and the results were calculated using a 95% confidence interval.
The results found that certain varieties of the independent variables had higher correlation than others. Obesity, weekly fast-food visits, not meeting physical activity standards, low confidence in eating healthy food, and non-Hispanic black residents were all found to be correlated to fast-food dense areas. (Li et al, 2009). The regression analysis used in the study was consistent with the models found in our textbook, as well as the confidence intervals which confirmed their findings (Lind et al, 2013). In the end, while this study provides evidence of a proponent of the obesity epidemic, it is also an interesting example of a real-life use of regression analysis.
